I see my team partially as my children (in the way that I want to nurture them, see them grow and make them happy) so when I have the opportunity to celebrate something like their birthday, you bet your sweet ass I’ll be hand making red lobster biscuits or something of the sort. No more pizza parties or Safeway cupcakes in my office!
We host a monthly birthday party to celebrate; I always have a sweet snack, and a card signed by everyone in the office. My team knows now (but this took a lot of time and guilt) to gather in the kitchen, sing happy birthday, celebrate with goodies and then converse about birthday plans with the special people. I have only one rule, which is: NO TO-GO ORDERS. If you want cake you’re going to have to hang out with the rest of us. No drive-by cookies, or desk dining… got it!? Good.
Celebrating monthly birthdays can get redundant— how many times can you have the same cake, or cupcakes, or cookies, and still make it feel personal for each individual? Making your employees birthday (or birth month) feel special and personal is an easy way to build company culture and office morale.
